If you are viewing this from a mobile device you won't see the entire description. To see the entire description please view the listing from a pc or laptop. This piece is by Texas Artist Janice Joplin (notice there is a difference in the spelling of her first name from the well know rock legend Janis Joplin.) Her studio is in San Antonio, Texas and I bought this from her at Fiesta Art Fair, a well known arts and crafts festival held during Fiesta in SA. Joplin works in clay, sculpting her whimsical animals etc. and hand painting them with underglazes which are then covered with clear glaze and fired. Since the pieces go into her kiln in their dried but raw clay form (after being painted) there are sometimes mishaps which is why I believe she sells items that have minimal damage as firsts. In the case of this piece the ear was glued on after firing. The doberman is obviously a doberman- she has a knack for finding the essence of the breeds that she reproduces in clay. The dress skirt is also a bell--the dogs legs, painted to match, dangle from an interior piece that gives her a place to string them and the piece does make a sound it you move it around. Additionally, the legs show when the dog is seated although that doesn't show in my pictures. The piece is not signed. It used to have a clear sticker with gold lettering but that fell off years ago and I lost it. I purchased this from her about 30 years ago. About ten or so years ago she was licensed with a commercial company to provide them with her designs called Fun Seekers, her Beach Lady series. These were made into many different products but so far as I know she has never commercialized her dog and cat items. The dog holds a kitten- like an adoptive mother. The details include a big bow on the back of her neck and a white collar and sash with another bow on the back of the dress. The dress has little flowers painted on the pink surface. Her work is what I consider to be folk art in its truest sense. I don't believe she considers it to be such but that is my opinion. I will soon be selling a companion piece to this, a dalmation dog, also holding kittens. It is a male dog and not a bell. It is my memory that she gave me the dalmation after I purchased this. The dog from the bottom of the skirt to the top of the head is 6-1/2" tall. Please note, the kitten, like a human baby, is playing with its foot. It might look like the kitten is missing a foot but you can see it is turned towards its body and tucked in, not missing. The kitten is blue but the doberman is painted just like a real doberman is marked. If you wish to see more of her work you can check online for this Texas Artist.

Her work is what I consider to be folk art in its truest sense. I don't believe she considers it to be such but that is my opinion. There is nothing polished or refined about this piece but it has an undeniable charm. You will like this if you love dogs and for a Dobie parent, this will be extra irresistable.
I will soon be selling a companion piece to this here on ebay, a dalmation dog, also holding kittens. It is a male dog and not a bell. It is my memory that she gave me the dalmation after I purchased this. I would have it up along with this but the pictures didn't come out right and I'm having to retake them.

It might look like the kitten is missing a foot but you can see it is turned towards its body and tucked in, not missing. The kitten is blue but the doberman is painted just like a real doberman is marked. I really love the humor and pathos found in her work.
